I said the wheels in the posts above were crappy. I've now started to work on them. The spokes and outer diameter of the hub are all metaballs. I'm working on the inner surface of the rim now using the same methods. Then I have to turn the thing around and do the back faces. It isn't perfect but I'm getting there. Metaballs are very tricky and it's taken me three days to get this far........! C&Cs welcome.
