I know she can act, but since when do ugly people who can act jump ahead of good looking people who can act?  There are many talented, good-looking, starving actors.

I can see if the role calls for ugly or weird-looking, there's a whole cottage industry in Hollywood acting for that (think the cast of villains in Buckaroo Banzai), but she's getting major protagonist roles.

Again, there are scads of vivacious good-looking, talented actors out there, bursting with personality, who can't get work.
