Alot of tools are available under Linux Wings3D, Blender, Gimp and alot of Windows apps will run under Linux using an emulation layer like wine or winex (Cedea or Crossover). You can even install VMWare or VirtualBox (like VmWare but free and IMHO better) and run a virtual session of Windows under a Linux host.

OpenSuse is a great Linux distro.... http://www.opensuse.org/ and very easy to install and configure... I've also tried Mandrake (now Mandriva) and Ubuntu... but much prefer OpenSuse...
