interestingly, the word "profanity' originally referred only to misuse of God's name and other religion-related words, etc (the literal meaning is "misuse of something holy). i.e, saying things liek "for god's sake, etc
also in those days, "cursing" meant just that, calling down curses on people. (saying things like God d***)
Swearing meand saying things like " so help me god, or by god, etc.
"dirty words" meant things like the f-word, etc
and "bad words" meant simpley any other offensive words.
excuse the digression (and possible hijacking of the thread) but I'm a linguist, it's in my blood to do things like this.
