I remember reading about that problem of the installer not finding the program in the proper place. I'll try to find it and see what is says. In the meantime, you might want to try Pixels3D version 3.6. for FREE. This is a full-featured and great modeling/animation program but does not export in 3DS or object file format (only exports DXF).
