Depends on what you want to do.
My main workstation has two 19" LCD screens 1280x1024, which works perfectly with Poser. One screen for the scene, the other screen for the palettes and everything.
Works also very comfortably with 3D Studio Max: one screen for the main window, the other screen for the toolboxes and floating toolbars.
Some other applications can't make use of two screens efficiently. Vue for example keeps everything witnin its boundaries, and in that case a large high resolution widescreen is more comfortable to work with. My second workstation has a 24" 1980x1200 widescreen LCD, that's the one I use for Vue work.
The pen is mightier than the sword. But if you literally want to have some impact, use a typewriter
