Mmm well .... without kicking a Vista Butt ....
Running a 32 bit on Vista 64 can be the reason for the hickups...
I had Vista 64 installed on 2 systems and both had loadfs of update and install errors ..
All the 64 bit software installed did run smooth like a baby's bottom 
And the 32 compatible setting of Vista not realy working,thats only driver related..
I hope you get this figured out..otherwise your in for a wobbly road
