One little thing in the 6 years that I have watched, dims that glimmer even more. LOL. Though I do remember a change with the children clothing tos between male and female, I think that was revamped right after the original rule. That was what 2/3 years ago?

This rule is so ridiculous that it may be changed. What I find even more ridiculous was the consideration of such a rule in the first place. It only hurts the community not help it.

Next thing you know, they will want everyone RF id tagged and have to scan yourself to log on. Sad, some will praise that idea too and even thank them for it. LOL

Quote - Bottom line is YOU (R'sity) are trying to control what is or is not allowed to be seen and downloaded by people! If a link is bad, people will let you know REALLY FAST!!! What you are doing is restricting access for people so that everything MUST have the seal of approval of the website! That is BULL! I don't need your approval to give my stuff away. I don't need your website to give it away either!

I'm sorry you're aggrivated here :(

You know, as much as I hate hints of big brotherdom and restrictions, rosity owns the site, and they have the right, and obligation to monitor or limit what and how gets downloaded off their site, or how things get accessed through their site. Even if free for most of us, it's their site.

I really don't see how putting your freebies through rendo's freebies section hinders you at all. If anything, makes it esier to find them. In my case, I tend to go to the freebie section to finds something, and don't think to dig through forums for links. Actually, I tend to dislike links to direct downloads from the forum, as I often like to see some info about what I'm downloading before I download it.

your missing a few points.

not everyone comes to rendo. there are many freebies that don't get posted here unless someone posts them in the forums.

Japanese sites. all of Kazboro's hairs. free software. etc

put it this way. Microsoft offer free programs that ppl here can use. you want them to put their stuff through renderosity testing?

also Poser Python Scripts that have been written by kind ppl here to help others out. want them tested before they can be posted? (they are freestuff..)

mrsparky ( ) posted Sun, 22 April 2007 at 5:47 PM

Dang silly idea.

Whats next - charging to upload freebies ?

Freestuff and freestuff makers should be encouraged and not hindered - as these are often the merchants of the future.

Pinky - you left the lens cap of your mind on again.

Quote - I really don't see how putting your freebies through rendo's freebies section hinders you at all.

And what about all of the other great freebie downloads around the Poser community? Renderosity is seeking to make it so that the only freebies allowed to be offered here, or linked to here are those that are in the free stuff area here at Renderosity.

Under this new policy you can't post a link to any site that has freebies. The only freebies that Renderosity is now allowing to be linked from their site, and only in the Free Stuff Forum,  are those that are in the free stuff section here.

This means that we can no longer post links to freebies in order to help each other out when looking for stuff. It also means not being able to post "found" links like I tend to do when I am looking for something and stumble on various other interesting sites with nice free stuff offers.

As I've said before, I can see having a forum where we post our free stuff offers and any free stuff links, regardless of where those items are hosted.  However, to make it only exclusive to Renderosity Free Stuff items is obscene.

As mrsparky said, freebie providers should be encouraged because they are likely to be merchants in time. All this is doing is hindering and discouraging them :(

EDIT:

I just wanted to address one thing that I recall reading above somewhere. I think it was Jumpstartme2 that mentioned about the Product Showcase  Forum as an example of a specialized forum when defending the reason behind the new Free Stuff Forum and freebie linking policy.

I browse that forum from time to time and the posts in there are NOT limited exclusively to Renderosity Merchants. I see ads posted there for products sold at other stores. However, the Free Stuff Forum is exclusive to Renderosity freebies.

Given the way Renderosity is trying to isolate themselves from every other site, I guess we  can expect that that will soon change too and that the Product Showcase Forum too will become Renderosity exclusive?

JHoagland ( ) posted Sun, 22 April 2007 at 9:11 PM

I really hate to add fire to this argument, but what, exactly, are the free items tested for?
On page 2 of the Poser Free Stuff section, there are 2 items with broken thumbnail images: "jabiru bird" and "AM_BodyMorph". There are 4 items on page 7 with the same broken thumbnail images:V4 Warrior outfit, Devil Props, Sage Texture For V3, and Sage Morphs For V3.
These aren't the usual "No thumbnail was supplied" message, but the "missing image" icon. Plus, I thought thumbnail images were required.

On page 4 is a "Doctor Strange M1". Now I know this issue is beyond beating a dead horse, but if the "testers" are going to "test" for copyright infringements, how is a Doctor Strange character allowed? Or does no one read Marvel Comics? And if none of the "testers" read Marvel Comics, how will they know if another user uploads another Marvel character?

And I'm offended by the nude thumbnail on page 10 for Miki2.0 Natural Stand Pose:Site Link. The character's naked butt and naked side-breast is too in-my-face.
(The "Japanese" items also have broken thumbnail images, but this seems to be a common issue.)

there are also many items to things that are not even offered at the linked site anymore.
look at poserdreams bed..... it's not on the site as there freebies are limited... and the thumbnail here is missing also... many of the older downloads are like this the links are no good.

Now this is where the new no link is real unhelpful to the readers of this forum: I read a request for an item and another person responded that said item was in existence, paraphrased, PM sent with link. No offense to the respnder, doing what new TOS states. Others may have been interested in said item but now SOL.

Quote - Apparently all freebies offered on this site by it's members have to be posted in the freebie section now. So instead of uploading the freebie to your server and just posting it here in the Poser forum as has been the case, you now have to formally submit the item to the free stuff section here so that the staff can test the product.

ROTFL... they won't even test their marketplace stuff (except to see if the zipped files go where they need to go), but they gotta test the freebies? That's friggin' rich... thx for the laughter, guys :) /P

Actually, I'm all for testing marketplace stuff. You're selling that stuff in exchange for money. So does the RMP finally do more than simply check to see if it unzips right, or is it that there's so much stuff that the queue has gotten that long? /P

I don't have a problem with testing in the MP as long as it's applied equitably.  I'm just saying that, if we can't post links to off-site freebies because they've not been tested and approved by the admins here, and adding the QC "worthiness" requirement in the MP, I think you're going to see a lot of people going to other sites to post their freebies and, perhaps, even selling.  I know that once the time frame for exclusivity has passed for my products here, I'm putting them up on my site for a cheaper price since I won't have to share the profits.

I honestly do not understand the supposed reasons behind this rule (apart from enforcing the marketplace and slowly drying the freestuff section).

Do they FEAR we would sue them because we have followed an external link and found a warez or a virus instead of the wanted freebie?

But EVERY site in this galaxy has a little disclaimer saying: "be aware: if you download something not hosted on this server, we are not responsible for it". And it has always been enough for all.

Okay, if I post a clearly illegal link  ("download free warez here!"), such a disclaimer could be objected, even in a court, and Rendo owners could forbid and delete this links.

But a freebie? Seems a bit paranoic to me.

P.S. Acadia, now you should seriously think about installing a dedicated payment phone number to answer to link requests from us all. But, please, no more than a couple dollar per minute, ok? Thanks!

StaceyG ( ) posted Mon, 23 April 2007 at 9:34 AM

We are still discussing this here at the office. I think there has been some confusion on whats what regarding this issue so please hang tight before jumping off the deep end:)

But I do want to say, somebody like say "DAD", I don't understand why you wouldn't take the few seconds to upload your item to the Freestuff area so it can be highlighted?  The majority of people wanting to get some freestuff items are certainly not coming to the forums to get it so you are really doing your freestuff item a dis service unless you don't want that many people having it??  To me the way I see the Freestuff area is its like a "Gallery for Freestuff" the upload process is simple and you just take the link you post here and put it in the appropriate field in the upload page??? I really don't get why someone would rather post a link in a forum thread than put it in a highlighted area specifically for freestuff?

Also one other note, places like Daz or Poserpros, they don't have a freestuff area ONLY a forum right?  Our freestuff area should be seen as the way their forums work, we have an AREA designated to freestuff not just a forum so over there is only ONE place to put your freestuff links, the forums. Here the Freestuff area is where you SHOULD put your links and the forum is an additional area where you can highlight it more..

Khai ( ) posted Mon, 23 April 2007 at 9:40 AM

What we CAN do is make a message in the FREEBEE !! forum with a link to the URL of the freebee at DAZ.COM
and thats how its always being ..and thats whats being ruled out now ....

Same with Appolo MAX stuff ..anton is giving a MAJOR freebee to the whole Poser community
And we/He should not be alowed to place a link here anymore ...
That cannot be the way you wanna do a freebee forum do you ?
