*The "fix materials node coordinates" Python script on the scripts page in my sigline tries to be a standalone which will do pretty much what svdl outlines.  Not brilliant code, but perhaps it can help....

Cage had some freebies, compatible with Poser 11 and below.  His Python scripts were saved at archive.org, along with the rest of the Morphography site, where they were hosted.
