I have a free Earth model tou could use as an examle. There is a bit of explanation on my web site. Did it with 4 nested spheres and careful attnetion to the atmosphere sphere.

1. Terrain and oceans sphere
2. City lights texture
3. Clouds (separate layer so i could use bumb maps and get shadows)
4. Atmosphere
