I've started using Poser with Poser 3, and then more an more with each version.  I got into the DAZ Millenium Figures(M2 and V3) right when Poser 5 came out.  That was when I started looking at Poser ike an Instrament.  SInce then I've worked on Poser, about all day, every day. 

I think the secret is to really make a conscious effort to do Character Studies for specific Figures.  Much work that goes into one figure does'nt work with any other figure, so you really need to research where you'll want to spend your engery.  I'd have prefered only one figure, but have needed to to have a helthy Male and Female.

Some will dissagree, but I think spreading yourself too thin and over too many Figures, is a huge waste of time.  You do'nt get around to everything that's really needed to make one figure shine, the first time around Poser, and then it's all chance from there.
