Yeah, it's tough finding a good image, showing how they worked. I remember you mentioning something of a 'working class style' which seems to look more like the 17th-ish century boot hose. Looks like they tied it with a ribbon, in some cases with handkerchief, and folded over the edge.

Then the more modern ones of Edwardian time seem to have been tied with lace ribbons and garters.
