Quote - Yeah, it's tough finding a good image, showing how they worked. I remember you mentioning something of a 'working class style' which seems to look more like the 17th-ish century boot hose. Looks like they tied it with a ribbon, in some cases with handkerchief, and folded over the edge.
Then the more modern ones of Edwardian time seem to have been tied with lace ribbons and garters.
I had forgotten about the handkerchief tie... that would have the pointy corners. Those images at the link you give do match up for lower class images I have seen. Kimber89 is absolutly correct in terms of middle-class women according to my historian friend while bellow the knee was taudry but representative of lower class wear. I have seen a number of images of poor women where no ribbon or garter is used but the top of the hose is pulled tight, the excess being rolled in a knot and tucked under the rolled down top. Closest modern equivalent is how dancers will pull the bottom of a shirt tight, twist the excess in a knot and roll it in the lower edge of the shirt. Can't find an image of that either.
Those shoes are a tour de force!
