some slide scanners are better than others. things to check: dynamic range (4 is good) and pixel resolution (4000 dpi is good). even though the film quality deteriorates steadily, some slides may have higher resolution and higher dynamic range than most scanners can interpret. using the term "dpi" with film is misleading, as the chemicals produce somewhat amorphous microscopic colour zones.
