Subject: JOELGLAINE, regarding the sweat effect, is THIS what you had in mind?

Hi Joel, I played around a bit and got this look using the granite node as you suggested, and a  specular light. Is this it? Or do I need to fiddle some more. :)

Yeppers!  GRANITE works slightly better than even small SPOTS.  I'm not sure why.  Conniekatt found out most of the basics in another thread, that I can't find.  YES--that looks like sweat dappling a girl's face, to me.

Sorry It took me a while to spot this.  Been busy IRL.

I think the granite works best because of it's black areas. It makes an excellent displacement
map. :) Ok, so now she's sweating buckets, now I need to make her run full out, instead of
an easy jog. Heh. BTW, the guy swooping to grab her is the millenium dragon with his red
texture applied. DOES he have a displacement map for scales? I stupidly forgot to look. I'll
have to sniff around when I get home from work. :) L8r.

LOL Don't know.  Can't wait to see the finished result!

just to say, that looks too uniform to me.  you might want to hand paint a mask to control the amount of "sweat".    for instance, more on the brow and nose and less on the chin. also, on the forehead, the spots look a bit big. i believe you could use a mask to control scale as well.

JOELGLAINE ( ) posted Thu, 28 June 2007 at 2:01 PM

That's a good idea, too.  This way is quicker, and if one doesn't have confidence in their artistic ability, this is an excellent work-around to not having a custom specular map at hand.

Unfortunately, hand painting anything is my weak point. I can modify textures of they are not
too complex, but anything involving real 2d art is beyond my limited skill. I have to go wth
this method because it's they only one I have the skill to use. Though it might be possible
to do what you suggest by using the grouping tool to make new MAT zones for the areas
that sweat the most. I'll have to experiment. The MAT room is rather intimidating, which is
why I haven't explored it much. :)

Okay, after several renders with different settings, I've come to the conclusion that  everything looks and works better if your main light is set to DEFUSE only, and let the SPECULAR light handle all the highlights. It gives you total control of the highlights and allows you to adjust their intensity without altering the light brightening the scene. Joel, I have her posed running full out. She notices the dragon and does what any Shadow Hound would do. She tries to draw her weapon. How is this?

that does look great!  the pose looks a little inaccurate (if i'm reading her legs correctly), but that doesn't matter because it feels right.  nice improvements!

I'd do something like export the body, minus hands and feet into tattoo or use UVmapper to make a UV you can paint on.  Then just create a mask to modulate the strength of the granite effect.  That could be done with colour math, right?  I'm thinking a mostly grey texture, with some soft airbrush white areas around the areas that would sweat the most, like the forehead.

Conniekat8 ( ) posted Fri, 29 June 2007 at 11:26 PM

This turned out really good :)
For the closeup shot, adding just a hint of bump to the sweat (plug the same node into bump map, or use blender node if there are other bumps there allready)
Now, that would make her sweat bullets :)

The regular patern of the sweat beads makes it look like she just started sweating. The trailing beads of sweat and little accumulations happen after she's been sweating for a little while, and beads merge together.

Of course, us grrrlz NEVER sweat that much!!! and...  and ...we don't pee in the shower either :P

Ok, Joel, I got her posted. Adjusted the camera too, to put her between the approaching
claws. Hi **Conniekat. Do you happen to remember the addy for that thread of yours that
Joel mentioned? My Shadow Hounds to a lot of fighting, so sweat is good, um, unless
you're a grrl that is! :)

Moogal, good advice, but one that has to wait a bit until I can get a bit more skillful in
those areas. I can model, pose with the best of 'em, but anything 2d is still a real PITA
to get done right. ^_-

I do believe that got me into Nodality in the material room into things I never tried before, and generated the later thread!  I got tons of help there and spawned the thread about sweaty foreheads (which I still haven't found).

There is SO much info about the material room, the damned thing could have it's own FORUM!

Easy to forget which is which.
