Well, I think my major problem was with a too high map size for the main light ... and the backlight, which I removed, it caused several anomolies.  So ... here is the latest.  Let me know what you think before I post it to my gallery.  Also ... I plan on using it for my avatar.  I want it to be nice. 

Learned a lot about nodes and look a couple of tutorials from bagginsbill to get to this.
