If you have the money, I would initially say go for the D80. But upon comparing features, they look pretty much the same and the D40x is a lot less expensive. The only differences I see are the type of autofocus each has (which is the biggie because the D40x can only autofocus iwth AF-S or AF-I lenses), the D80 also has 1/2 EV steps in addition to 1/3, a difference in the continuous shooting features, the D80 has more self timer options, the types of batteries each uses is different, and the D40x is lighter. It looks like it would boil down to which is more comfortable in your hand and is the D80 worth the extra cost to be able to use a wider range of AF lenses. *((I have no experience with either camera - ;'] ))*
