Subject: Photoshop CS3 Extended and Vista Ultimate Edition--Unhappy Togehter

Tomsde ( ) posted Fri, 06 July 2007 at 2:32 PM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 12:35 PM

Due to a catastrophic computer failure I was forced to reinstall my OS, so instead of going back to XP I thought it would a good time to upgrade to Vista.  I also have Vista Home Premium on my laptop (it came with it).  At any rate Photoshop CS3 Extended seems to be running fine on my laptop, but when I reinstalled it on my desktop I had problems.  Before I installed the update patches for Photoshop, CS3 wouldn't open it would just hang, even after it activated.    After I installed the updates for it it would open, but hang upon closing.  I have no clue as to what is wrong as all my hardware is the same as it was under XP, I've not installed any new devices except for a thumb drive for Ready Boost, and my laptop which has less resources runs it fine.  The Adobe website isn't much help.  Anyone else having similar problems?

From what I've seen over the last several months, Vista / Microsoft seems to have an issue with drivers... everyone else's. Even NVidia has been run 'round the block on this, and it seems that the only resolution with their vid-cards, is to use an earlier version. My simplest advice to anyone... if the system did not come with Vista, do not install it... use XP... that goes for systems that you build yourself, especially. Lou.

my CS3 has had no problems running on my Vista Ultimate -- but my machine was built by alienware, so they probably busted a$$ for compatibility. the only complaint i've got is that my left ctrl key ( you know, the one that you use for every shortcut in PS ) is faulty >.

After doing some research on the Microsoft website I discovered the cause of the problem.  On some systems Photoshop conflicts with Windows Live One Care antivirus software.  The work arounds is to disable One Care when using Photoshop.  I can live with this until they patch it--Photoshop or Microsoft, both are aware of the problem now.  If they don't patch it I will simply ditch Live One Care in favor of MacAfee (which I loathe to do because I had conflicts with MacAfee in the place--and apparently Norton Anti-virus doesn't play well with Vista at all inspite of their claims it does).  Since I don't email or multi-task online while working in Photoshop I should be OK--the firewall doesn't interfere with Photoshop.

good research tomsde, let us know if this does in fact resolve the conflict. i agree with lou when it comes to Vista upgrade... best to stick with a "known evil" :) retrocity

Unfortunately I have been having even more issues--if that is possible.  Open GL doesn't work properly under Vista on my system even though I have the most recent Radeon Driver for Vista.  Poser won't properly install, some other programs I own are totally incompatible, while others have only limited functionality.  I'm at the end of my rope, I'm reverting to XP and cutting my losses.

Does anyone know if Vista can be deactivated and reinstalled on another PC.  I would like to try to sell my copy of Ultimate Edition so I can recoop some of the money I've wasted on it.

My guess is that Vista also hashes the hardware of the computer that it is on. I can't find any option to deactivate and transfer the license. I suppose you could get away with putting it on another computer, just tell them that your laptop died when you call them to reactivate it.

I discussed the problem when I had to go on tech support for Windows Live OneCare because it inexplicably stopped working.  They denied having a record of the Photoshop/OneCare issue, but I could hear the support person talking away when I explained issue.  I also told her I had read it on their forum other users had the same problem.

She had also told me is OneCare is uninstalled you can't relink it to it's backup for your computer archieve.  Unfortunately they also have the file incripted so that it can't be erased.  Not even the microsoft tech, taking control of my PC could do it.   I had the same problem when I had Vista uninstalled from my desktop PC.  Then Microsoft tried to tell me it wasn't their software, but my external hard drives (it happened on 2 different drives).  The only way to reclaim the space is to reformat your hard disc, which meant I had to remove all my other data from the drives then do a reformat :(.

This is why I don't use Live OneCare. It has caused a lot of problems for me on my XP boxes. :( Microsoft really needs to put a disclaimer on the backup software that comes with Live OneCare.

If you want to remove the backups without reformatting, I found this link for you: weblogs.asp.net/lduveau/archive/2007/07/19/delete-live-onecare-backup-folder-in-vista.aspx

If you are going to get rid of it, try a trial of BitDefender. I wouldn't recommend Norton AV, I have it on both my Vista boxes and it slows them down a lot.

Unfortunately, I'd been there, done that!  Those steps didn't work.  I turned off OneCare backups and intend to use Acronis True Image 10.  I also manually back up my photos/3D work  to another drive just in case the drive image would fail.  I tried Norton Ghost in the past and after using it faithfully to backup my computer for a year, when I attempted a restoration with it, it corrupted Windows and forced me to do a clean reinstall of Windows to fix things  :(.  I will only use a drive image restoration now as an absolute last resort!

That having been said my computer is so lovely and perky since I aborted Vista.  I'll be more cautious in the future.

vista + norton 360 = total crap. i lasted 2 days. in those 2 days i had to reboot 7 times, because my windows validation kept getting unvalidated. 360 was shutting down my validation service. I couldn't disconnect my internet while it was running either. a real shame because i liked the toolset norton provides for keeping your computer in shape. i miss my systemworks though, it was loads better than this 360 crap. I use the AVGfree now though.

I had heard from the sales man at Best Buy that there were serious issues with Norton and Vista, so I didn't even attempt it.  I've had major system conflicts with McAfee in the past, so I didn't want to do that, so Live OneCare was the only thing that  was left that was supposedly Vista compliant.

Now that I've reverted my desktop to XP I've reinstalled Norton and no problem under XP.

If I have continued issues with Vista and Photoshop I will try McAfee, my friend has it with his Vista and it seems to be doing okay so far.

I have Vista and Norton Internet Security and the only problem is that you had to download a new installer from Symantec. The one on the disc will not work with Vista.

What's sad is that the open source programs I use (7-Zip and OpenOffice) have no problem in Vista... it's when I tried to load up Illustrator CS2 that it crashed and burned.

Tomsde ( ) posted Wed, 25 July 2007 at 6:46 AM

The guy at Best Buy said that Norton will eventually build up excessive files under Vista, but perhaps they've resolved that issue. . .  Norton is certainly my favorite--when they release a true Vista version for 2008 I have confidence all the bugs will be worked out.

I have a lovely file management program called Explorer Plus that works fine in XP, but Vista does not support many of it's features--it also had problems displaying Vista's icons for some reason.  It had a wonderful feature called file tracker that added a drop down to the open dialogue where I would easily navigate in one click to the folders I'd recently used--that doesn't work at all in Vista.   I've been searching for something that works with Vista to replace it since there won't be any updates for Explorer Plus since the company that produced it isn't supporting or selling it any longer.  Many similar programs out there don't offer all the features I've grown to love, especially not the file tracker.  :(
