Ok, reading your instructions.. looks like first you need a material for each uv map.
The obj I'm using only has 3 material groups, head, upper body and lower body, and each already have their own uv map.
I created a color channel for each one.
For this model, that should be it, right?
Way too many people take way too many things way too seriously.
