Subject: Carrara pre-purchase modelling question...

Dynamo ( ) posted Fri, 10 August 2007 at 1:09 PM · edited Sun, 01 December 2024 at 2:27 PM

I'm on the fence for Carrara, I think somethign that could put me over one way or the other is it's ability to model, Does anyone do all their modeling in Carrara?  How does it stack up or is this one of those "you can do some, but I recommend exporting to Hexagon" issues because Hex is better?

Dynamo, currently I do  all of my modeling in Carrara 5 Pro, mostly in the vertex room. I used Hexagon for it's organics uv mapping tools, but have recently switched to "Roadkill" a free program. I've also used Silo but prefer Carrara's intrface. IMHO Carrara's biggest disapontment compared to other modeling software on the market ro day is it's very crude (comapratively) Organics UV mapping tools, but "RoadKill" is free, available and easy to use for organics

hope this helps

I have used Ray dream designer (pre-Carrara) and Carrara from version 1 to version5 .I think Carrara is a very good all around 3d soft for hobbyist like me. Many tools ,excellent rendering But i always find it was slow in modelling and and having  bad selection tools (better now than ever but still need to amelioration) ,especially  in vertex  modelling

Since i have used Silo 1,4 and now 2  and Rhino version 4  i know , by comparaison, that these have  much better  modelling tools than Carrara  but still use Carrara 5 or others for shading and renderingt

Could you link to roadkill?  my google is not having much luck with "roadkill modeller" or "roadkill 3d"

It does thank you, organics are a major concern, my aim is to slowly work my way to unique character creation to free myself from using the likes of Vic and that ilk..

Roadkill 1.1 is strickly a UV mapping software, not modeling. You can find it here

http://www.pullin-shapes.co.uk/page8.htm

It's much like the uv unwrapping tools in Hex but a bit less buggy. It's a stand alone program, altho it can be used as a plug-in for Studio, Maya, and XSI so don;t be put off when you first read the page, as it makes a lot about it's plug in opereation.

nice thanks!- That helps me decide incredibly!  Nice interface, I re-read your first post doh!  I needed more coffee then.

I thought it was new until I googled it and saw that I'd looked at it before.  I did think it was a plug-in the first time I read the page.  (Hmmm...  Maybe it could become a plugin for Carrara?)
