Quote - But unfortunately, this great and fabulous tool is in the hands, 90% of the time, of semi- educated chimps.  To prove this, all you have to do is go to the grocery store checkout, and see how your tally can go awry by 3-4 dollars, with a sophisticated scanner handled by a high school drop-out.

I tried reading your whole rant, but didn't get past this part.  See, it's insulting, big time.  Most of us (you know, the ones you see as high school dropouts, chimps, etc.) have college degrees, are highly intelligent, and could amaze you if you try.  It just seems that you don't know the hierarchy of how those "scanners" actually work.
Each item (each particular item, for example a 2 liter of Coke or a box of Kraft Macaroni and Cheese) has its' own barcode, and each are input into the system.  If someone along the line has either doubled back and input old information or even neglected to input the new (as in for sales items), it won't show up properly at the register.  And, if a printed barcode is either printed incorrectly or unclear, it won't scan.
Mistakes are made constantly.  I doubt you're perfect.  But, I can't see you really getting your point across if you're going to start out by insulting people.

And, that's my 2cents.  Carry on.
