I'm not sure if I understand what you mean..so excuse me if I'm way off base here.
Anytime I want more than one character in my scene I add it the same way I added the first one...by dbl. clicking the model I want...and adding to the same scene the first one is already in.  I just move them around out of the way of each other while I'm working on one.
