Subject: Problem saving dynamic hair with a shader

Neyjour ( ) posted Tue, 11 September 2007 at 4:11 PM · edited Fri, 29 November 2024 at 7:46 AM

I asked about this in the DAZ forums but nobody seems to know how to do this, if it's a bug, or if I'm just doing something wrong.  I hope someone here can help!

Here's what I'm doing, step by step:

  1. I created a folder for my hair and added it to the Objects tab of my Browser.

  2. I select the hair, go to the Texture room and make my changes to the shader. Basically, I just changed the root and tip color, shininess and highlight.

  3. I then go back to the Assemble room, go to the Objects tab (on the right) and drag my hair into the new folder I just added, and save it.

  4. I delete my hair from the scene, then click and drag my newly saved hair back onto the figure...and the shader I made is gone! It's reverted back to the default shader.

What is going on???? There has got to be a way to save hair with a shader.

Hi Neyjour, Very fix-able. The error is in grabbing the Hair from the Objects tab. Don't do that. The objects tab contains "elemental", as in first or basic, objects and does not retain shader information. So, it's only the geometry information. What you need to do is drag the hair directly from the Instances Tab instead of the Objects Tab. Dragging from the Instances tab will embed BOTH the geometry and the Shader information. Mark

That did it!  Yay!!!  Mark, thank you so much!  😄

One other thing...the image preview of my hair, in the Objects tab and in the folder I saved it to, is blank.  Is that normal?

Unfortunately, yes. However, a good naming convention and/or additions of comments on saving to the folder helps out.

Okay, I'll be sure to do that.  Thanks again!  😄
