I agree with all that has been said. Create site with a clean look and intuitive interface. Keep page loading times to a minimum. Avoid FLASH preferrentially. Also, keep in mind you want the images too look good in the interface, not get lost in it. My own site is due for a redesign, it has become too cluttered (except for the start page). And I need to start hosting my own gallery, hahah. But I created a site for one of my wife's projects that garnered some acclaim, take a peek at the link I provided if you'd like. The galleries are pretty straight forward.
