Here's an idea: I made the thin line between the two spheres out of a primitive cylinder. I built a shader with nothing but glow channel info. The glow channel was a mix of black and blue, using the spots pattern as the function. I played with the settings until I got something that looked like a blue, glowing cow. I applied the shader to the cylinder at frame 1. I clicked the "shuffle" button on the spots function, then applied the new shader at 1 second. I copied the key frame from frame 1 to 2 seconds, then copied the keyframe from 1 second to 3 seconds.... This is what I got. Hope this helps!
