If you get these problems, do your pic in layers. It means having to do your rendering from back to front, which is a pain, but you can get so much more into your pic by doing this. Also, may I recommend that you "save" more often. Whenever you reach a point where you know you "might" get the error, save it, that way, you can go back to that last stage just before the error. You can always delete the many files afterwards, but you can't get back all those hours you worked on a pic, just to have it "lost" to an exception error.
