I'm using windows vista, but that usually hasn't given me any problems.   As for saving often, I usually Save As every time to avoid these problems...the thing is, sometimes this has happened and the file has eventually loaded, but only after I've left the computer off all night.  So, at least in those instances, I don't think it's a bad write to file.
