Back up a little bit.  Chances are, when you were editing the OBJ in notepad, something bad happened.  I strongly recommend you roll back a little bit, to your modeling application, and try again.

• What modeling app are you using?
• What options are you using on export (if any are allowed)?
• What options are you using in Poser on import?
• Have you tried this whole set of steps with a very simple model e.g. a cube, with a simpler selection of polygon groups?

I think you will be much less frustrated if you try to nail down the exact procedure in a simple case, rather than trying to learn all of it at once with a very complex model like a typical clothing item.
