I didnt know you were a Mac person Congrats!!
you have "discovered" Compositing
as in rendering with an Alpha Channel that comes in transparent
in a video editor .
this is essentially a basic version of the same technique hollywood
uses to add CG element to live footage.
Its good to see you so enthusiastic about learning animation and CG and now video editing
it can take you alot farther than just rendering still images and posting them in online "galleries"
