As Miss Nancy said, only single (MT5) materials will work in everything from P5 to P7. Material collections (MC6) will only work in P6 and above. I'm not sure, but there may well be some node types that were added to later versions; these should be avoided if you want to retain compatibility. I don't have a list though.
