I'm just starting to experiment with C6Pro lights and thought to light Stonemasons superb Urban Sprawl as it demands to be done...

I'm trying to get an effective streetlight but I'm having an issue getting the light to actually illuminate other objects.

I have placed a simple car, that came with C6P under one of my test lights and there seems to be no effect (see attached link)
I have played with range, angular fall-off etc but i just cant get the car illuminated, I have changed the shader on the car to one that should reflect light well.
Where am I going wrong?

You dont have use the All Objets Except  or Only options in the light tab? See the attached image.

Just a wild thought, your lights are outside the Stonemasons object maybe?
Go into 4 screen view and ensure your lights are inside the Stonemasones area.

I used another car object (ADR Speedworks) with satisfactory results, so it maybe its something to do with the shader, the bit I cannot understand is there should still be a difference between the light area and dark area.
It seems this is only happening when I use Carrara native objects?
The ligt is definately in the SM area as the tarmac is lit in the right place.

GKDantas ( ) posted Sat, 24 November 2007 at 5:53 AM

I did some tests with some default objects here and a spot and everything looks OK. Now I have look at your image again and my question is: what is the car color? Maybe it is too dark so we cant se the self shadow. Other thing select the car and look if the options Cast Shadow and Received Shadow are on... you maybe need to select every part to see this.

thanks for the advice, I will look at these options too, you maybe right about te colour, but surely even black would be illuminated if half in light and half out?.
I have figured out its definately the car not the lights that is the problem now....

ShawnDriscoll ( ) posted Sat, 24 November 2007 at 4:24 PM

I don't see a problem.  Just move the car under the street light.

Increase the light power to see if it light the car better.

Shonner: I know your pretty good with Carrara, however let me highlight the problem, which is with me and not the software: This project is to be an experiment with all sorts of lighting in one scene, heres a new render where I have progressed a little. (notice the building in the background where my experiment of lighting the windows has begun, quite pleased with that!) I have used a different model of a car and placed it half in the light and half out of the light and this is giving me the desired effect, the car is lit correctly. My problem is in the final scene I will use different cars (dont want clones!), which will have to be carrara native cars as I do not posses others, but in the first image it looks the same in or out of the light. Now I know its not a lighting problem but a shading issue that I still cant figure...

GKDantas ( ) posted Sat, 24 November 2007 at 5:46 PM

Try to put the two cars in this last render so we can see what happen... If this is a problem we need to know what is. Tell me the name of the object that is having trouble too, so I can try here too.

Hello Kunshouling

here's a thought for you: perhaps your global illumination is too bright - or your ambient light is too much. If you think about it, if it's dark enough to have streetlights on, most of the surrounding areas away from the streetlights would be really quite dark - the buildngs would be in silhouette against the skyline and so on.

Maybe it's not a shader problem, but perhaps there is just too much "scene" light, so it's cancelling out the effect of your shaders.

Good call Jones!!, Never looked at that option, turned it down a tad and your right.
Thats what I like about this place, so many people willing to help and share the benefit of their experience.
Once I,ve completed this image I will post a copy here, thanks guys

I was kind of curious where the main light was coming from.  If it was ambient light, set it to 0%.  You want to use a distant light for the entire city, set very low around 5% that you can do Global Illumination from.  Increase it to 15% if there is a full moon.

But I still think there is a problem with the car's shaders.  The second image looks great from the many street lights you added.  I'm glad you found a better car.

The final image will use hdri but for rendering tests ive turned of the global, but Jones was right about the ambient setting and I will need to sort the shaders on the carrara native vehicles, ill try those lighting settings too, the hdri image is a full moonish night...

Looks great! Maybe some trash in the street? I like it. Looks late - no one is out - kinda like "I am Legand".

I agree! Looking very nice!

There are some Lightwave car models here:

Some might be of use to you.
