Modo is a good one to "veer towards". When it comes to pure modeling, it can't be beat IMO.
It might take a year or so to download the app over a dial-up connection, though. 
You might need to go for the boxed version. In such a case, old-fashioned 'snail mail' would likely prove to be faster than downloading.
