Just change the extension when using "Save As..." and it will be saved thusly.  The second option, "Save as Type",  is just a display filter for the current folder contents shown in the file dialog box.

C makes it easy to shoot yourself in the foot. C++ makes it harder, but when you do, you blow your whole leg off.
