Yippee skippy! I figured out the save issue. It turns out that because I am a lazy Mac guy I am used to double clicking  a file  to open it. Wrongo! I discovered that I am saving Bryce files afterall, but to open them I have to first open Bryce and then open the file from within Bryce, sort of like software used to be 15 years ago. I suppose I am missing something.
