Trepz I have to ask after your last comment about repair with vista.   Have you ever used XP and how long.
 Yes there is a repair back to last known good configuration and there is also a restore back to last good configuration and you dont need to hunt a cd to do it for the restore back.....:)

Also most people who have important stuff on their HD's will use backup utilitys like ghost to keep a good image ready if they dont use the above 2 ways to restore.
 To format its as easy with XP as vista if you do it from the install cd. :)
