I tried it (the 2.4GHz) out at my local Apple store and it was very fast compared to my current 2.0GHz17" ALS iMac. If you're gonna get an iMac then go for the 2.8 GHz one. The 2.4 uses a mobile processor while the 2.8 uses the powerful extreme one.

Mobile processor? Not quite up on my Mac stuff, can you elaborate? Still, you say the 2.4 was plenty fast, right? That 24" monitor is something else too, very classy.
