Subject: Poser works horrible with 4 core Cpu's ... or does it .... "help, tips, advice ?

BAR-CODE ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2008 at 9:33 AM · edited Thu, 12 December 2024 at 6:37 AM

I have installed a Intel Quad core Cpu and 4 GB in my XP system..
Every program runs fine and fast .. BUT ..
Poser is horrible slow and sluggies and screws things up..
I reinstalled Poser 6 and poser 7 ..
But it realy looks like a hang up ..and it becomes completly unsueble for me...
being it in poser 6 and 7 a like ..
Is there something i should know  about Poser and Quad core intels etc etc..
And yes i have the latest drivers etc etc etc etc ..

One other little thing .. almost ALL VGA card these days are gamers card .... shitty anti aliasing
that cant be switched off ...
But in other programs like Silo Vue Carrara etc etc thats not a problem, only poser has problems
And i dont think that Smith Micro is going ot change anything for the good ...
Seeing what crappy other products they have i dont see a good shiny future for poser..

So anybody knows a good tip the make it work a bit better..

Thnx

Chris

Poser 6 wont work with quad cores at all. P7 will work but not as fast as other apps.

As for AA, what card are you using ? All nVIDIA (and probably ATI cards also) have an option in their display properties to force AA to off.

thefixer ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2008 at 10:55 AM

*Poser 6 wont work with quad cores at all.

*Beg to differ, I've been running it just fine for nearly 12 months on a Quad core Q6600, no problems at all!

Agree with thefixer: Poser 7 runs fast and fine on my Q6600/XP64

I mean it will only use 1 core, or are you using all 4 cores on poser 6 ?

pjz99 ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2008 at 11:37 AM · edited Sun, 02 March 2008 at 11:37 AM

Ghonma is right, Poser 6 will run on a quad core processor, but it will only use 1 core.

*Ghonma is right,

*No he's not actually, he was quite specific and I quote: "*Poser 6 wont work with quad cores at all."

"Won't work at all" to me means "won't work AT ALL" not "will only work on 1 core"
That's not what he said!!

I think he acknowledged that and clarified, if you notice ^^

i have a brand new Asus /Ati EAH 6350
And that has NO option to switch "AA"  OFF ,only to set it to minimal use.

And poser work but its selecting random or no parts ..and the "Bizzy" pointer stays a long time..
It actualy "looks like" it going Cpu by Cpu 4 times  ..and then goes on ...
I have done 4 complete reinstalls so far im a computer repair/technician myself so i know what is what etc etc..
I cant find it what is screwing up poser this way...  strangely enough its once more poser that fails the bar....

Check if "Enable hardware shading" is set to OFF in the Render Settings for Preview
If it is set to ON it can slow down the machine quite a lot especially in the UI

BAR-CODE ( ) posted Sun, 02 March 2008 at 2:44 PM

Mmmm Thnx Wim...
I had to set it to software handeling in stead of hardware ..now it looks fine..
Im not sure if it is .. but the delay in selecting parts is gone now..

So for now thnx

Here is a post by Gareee that helped me correct a similar problem I was having with Poser. Evidently ATI is incorporating some of the driver issues from Vista to XP now. I contacted Uli at EF about it last month. Use the 7.12 drivers, and in the poser ini in the documents applications folder make this change: Here are the steps in a nutshell: "Windows Vista owners with certain ATI graphics cards may notice that Poser takes a long time to highlight the body part or prop that is moused over (due to the long delay it may appear that items are not highlighting at all.) This complicates the job of selecting parts to pose; the situation can be greatly improved by editing the Poser.ini file to set the PREVIEW_OGL_OBJECT_BBOXPICKING entry to 1 (from the default zero.)" That resolved the issue here with the 7.12 drivers. I always update my drivers as soon as they are available, and ran into this weeks ago.. it drove me NUTS trying to figure out what was what, but fortunately, I had a poser guru I could ask about it. So, install the 7.12 ati driver, reboot, and then make the ini change before starting poser up.. I didn't see any issues at all with P7 after that change.

Did you say "delay in selecting parts"?That's the ATI graphics card.

Go to Users/user account/AppData/Roaming/Poser 7 and edit the Poser.ini file in a text editor and replace
PREVIEW_OGL_OBJECT_BBOXPICKING 0
with
PREVIEW_OGL_OBJECT_BBOXPICKING 1

Hopefully there will be a driver update from ATI to fix this soon.

Thnx Paloth..
I sure will check it out ..but my card is realy realy New ..and it says it wont work with older drivers.
I tryed but got nowere with installing them..
The change in poser ini i can always try ..

Thnx !

Evendetly ATI HAS finally figured out what was wrong, and we'll see the driver correction for this not in March, but in April, I think. (it's a major driver update)

I think (but am not sure) that it also affects dial focus issues as well.

Its not with the P7 one ..

The software setting work fine btw .. but i like to make em the same p6 and p7

P6 poser.ini is in prefs in the runtime folder
P7 poser.ini is in Documents And Settings Application DataPoser 7 folder

I don't notice any difference between software and hardware accumulation buffer for OpenGL

The Enable Hardware Settings is another setting which uses the GPU for special features and the speed depends on your hardware.
The Enable Hardware Settings is only valid for preview and only present in Poser 7
I usually have it off and turn it on to check on details for textures. In that case I also set the preview texture size at a higher value. Afterwards don't forget to set it to a lower value again since Poser needs the memory.

Wim

Gosh! I have also same problems but my cards are GTS8800 and there's no way I modify the configuration in it.
Running slow as a turtle, using like 20%max of mine QuadCore and taking like almost 3Gb (XP 64 bits have 8 GB) to render simple files (ok I'm rendring to it's maximun resolution...but..)
I'm in total angryness...
How come that application can be stupid. Uses loads of memory just to be standing there doing nothing. (I open the Task manager to see how Poser is going..and the numbers wont move for several seconds..I'm not using the pc for anything else..just testing..) Takes about 2 hours to redner a full resolution file that has about 20 props and 01 V4 model ligthly clothed. Is that possible?
Does not matter if I changed to SliMode will take about 1 hour and 20 min! Same file!
Can anyone, please tell how do I fix it? It's software configure in Poser preferences./render tipes.
Yes all last drives in ALL. Pacthed Poser 7 also.

my rendering goes good and fast no problems there ..it was the selecting of object and manupilating things that was a hell on steroids....

But rendering is not a problem so far

Have you ever considered not getting a mainstream video card and go with something like the nVidia Quadro or the ATI FireGL workstation line?  They can be more expensive, but are designed for 3D Apps, CAD, Animation,  etc.  They can run games, but are not the best choice for them since they are workstation cards.

Gareee ( ) posted Sun, 09 March 2008 at 11:03 PM

Yer talking going from a $150 video card to a $600 videocard.. and poser shouldn't NEED something that high end to run properly.

If I can run the latest hot games with great fps, at 1920x1200 resolution, then I shouldn't see slowdown in poser's preview window..;)

dajones3 ( ) posted Mon, 10 March 2008 at 9:04 AM

A very valid point, but if you are wanting to use more than Poser, the OpenGL based cards are the way to go.  Also, you can get a fairly reasonably priced card in that genre for about the same price you pay for a 8800 GTS 640.  I've used both types and did find the workstation class better at 3D modeling, but they did take a hit in the gaming realm.  However, some of the newer cards act almost the same as their mainstream cousins.

BAR-CODE ( ) posted Mon, 10 March 2008 at 9:14 AM

I never play games..
And i always use Open GL cards ..
But workstasion card are as common here as snwo in july....
And if i do find one it cost me $2000 due to the value of the monopoly money called Dollar...

Buti have fixed it and im waiting for the drivers from ati to be fixed...

Ps i had a card in my hand ..and the sales person says ..mister that generates 800 frames a second....
I sayed but we can only see 25 ..what do i do with the other 775 frames i dont see :woot:
He looked down and walked away..
I did not tell him i had my own computer wholesale store for 10 years 😉

HAHA, yeah, I do enjoy the looks on the salespersons faces when you bring up a few good points like that.  I'm glad you have a handle on the problem.  Now if the engineers would fix the driver issues, the world would be a happier place. :D
