I've been testing something similar, a morphable scene, and found out that if you make it (the Scene/Landscape) slightly transparent you could still separate the model from the BG using the Tiff Alpha channel, which makes it a lot easier to edit the image in a 2D art package. Unfortunately overlapping transparent model parts 'whites out' the gray in the Alfa making it as white as a solid model.
