Yes, we're generating more data (weight values) than is needed by that code, and a lot of it could be by-passed with some simple bounding box tests (until you got within range of an actual collision)... but at some point (once you have the objects close to each other), you still need to determine ray->polygon intersections along with the distances generated in those tests.
