There are settings to only save 1 or none prior renders in cache, it's in edit/ general preferences/ under render. also there are settings to reload textures, or reuse shadow maps thats under render I don't know which uses less memory. Something else you might do is to empty your undo/redo cache its in edit/general preferences/document.
I have mine set to where I only save one prior render and I empty my undo/redo cache and I usually don't have any problems.
