Well of course I did refer to "His Majesty's Colony of Australia", as it was back then.
All of this, along with Johnson-Tugwell's subsequent public disgrace, was hushed up at the time; but British Foreign Office records, available since 1987 under the 50 year rule, record at great, indeed extravagent, length J-T's "flagitious" [sic] tendencies during his short period of governance of His Majesty's most important antipodean responsibility (New Zealand being regarded, obviously, as a distant outpost of Surrey).
