This is native silver crystals.  Yes, metals do form crystals as with pyrite but gold and silver are not often seen in this form.  Soft as the metals are when dislodged from the native environment and found in a riverbed, for instance, the metal is in beaten down nugget form.   Crystals like this are considered specimens, not for the melting pot.

The crystal form is  from Kongsberg, Norway, given to me by a fine Norwegian woman  I have not seen for at least 20 years.  Her father was associated with the old mines for which the city was named.

I only figured it out because I'm trying to identify a rock my Son found and a couple days ago was doing a net search and came across a pic of silver in it's native state so remembered it :)
