Many files will have a readme telling where the bits ought to go. If you are on a Mac, get Martin's MacConverter and MacInstaller... and it will put everything in the right place for you, clean up crosshairs, and otherwise make life easier. If you try to load a .pz3 file or other such, and Poser can't find a texture, etc., it will often ask you "where is xxx?" and you can give it instructions (as long as you know where you put it!)
