Have you tried using the CROSSWALK plugins ? They allow you to import/export stuff to and from Maya, MAX and XSI via COLLADA and can also open standalone COLLADA files. They work for me for importing D|Studio COLLADA exports into XSI so it's worth trying for MAX also:

The same installer should detect whatever app you have installed, and yes it runs on 64 bit.
