Geometry switching only works properly on figures, and I can't see any benefit in making a conforming hat (it will be harder to fit to other figures, for example). Just make sure you have polygons in the right places and it will morph just fine. As you can see from Mark's post, there's as many different ways of doing this as there are modellers. :)
