I think that the thing about booleans is that if you start simple you can quickly work up to complicated.
I seem to remember a quote from a sculpterer. It went something like this:
"The statue is already there in the rock. I just chip off the parts that aren't the statue."
If you find the idea of booleans worrying, just create a cube and make it positive. Then create a cylinder and make it negative. Set the cylinder into the cube - doesn't really matter where - and group! Observe what happens!
The possibilities are endless.
