I'd go with MGD where possible ensure the camera is supported on a good tripod.
Weighting it is good if thats possible.

If you don't have a tripod then use the poor mans bean bag, a couple of coats or jackets, line up the shot, stick the self timer on and step back from the camera.

Another way of blur free espically on long exposures and if your camera supports it, is a remote control. I've seen some models now have infra red remotes, but they seem look a bit pricey just like the standard own brand remotes I use a 12 quid Hama brand remote on the Sony and thats fine.
