Since I recently upgraded my PC to Vista I'm having problems with deleting Figures or the render does not complete at all.

If I upgrade to Poser Pro will there be the same issue ???
Don't want to spend my money for something that is not running very well under Vista

Hi, I have P7 running under Vista Ultimate 32 bit, and it runs fine. On a few occasions where there was a quick crash, the culprit was always the video drivers to blame and Vista rolling back the driver to an earlier 'buggy' version without asking. I have an nVidia 8500 GT and the lastest drivers for Vista are Microsoft certified and work well with Poser. I hopt this helps in some way.

I've been running p7 and poser pro both on vista 64, with no issues like that since january.

Well I have Vista 32 bit and Poser 7 does not complete the render at all neither I can delete the figure. I have a nVidia 7300 and it is updated with the latest driver

Could you contact tech support about this? We may be able to figure out what's going wrong.

I just want to say, that I worked the whole day with POSER PRO (the full edition) (for about 224 bucks) and POSER Pro renders perfectly fast and without errors!!!!

I rendered 2000 x 1800 pixel pix at 300dpi  (for printing) with displacement, raytracing, shadows and so on and so enabled... EVERYthing fine!!!

I downloaded  a cpu- and-fan-application and watched on my second monitor the temperatur and the fans during work and rendering... EVERYthing fine!!!

And I've got an ordinary PC: WinXP home, Athlon dualcore, 4GB DDR RAM (not DDR2), 512MB graphiccard...

And most important: Before when I rendered the very same picture on the same PC with Poser 7, Poser 7 was always running out of memory and crashing... With POSER PRO it NEVER happened today..

I just bought Poser Pro because I had this problem with Poser 7 and wanted to ask if Poser Pro has the same problems like I had with Poser 7 under Vista.

I had WinXP before and had never any problem with my renders or deleting figures.

If Poser Pro indeed is better as Poser 7 I might have luck...just downloading Poser Pro and it will take some time till I have my file complete for installation :)

I will buy WinXP 64 bit as OS.

I ordered it today. And they say it is much better then WinXP 32bit if you need a lot of memory.

It does not make PoserPro faster but WinXP 64bit and Poser Pro together will make the most out of my 4 GB RAM ...

You don't need to buy XP64 you can upgrade to it if I'm not mistaken :)

I have Vista 32 bit and I have similar problems as JurgenDoe does. About 70% of Poser 7 works fine. I have problems with some of the dialog boxes. If I want to delete something I have to wait about a minute for box to disappear and for the object to be removed after I click on OK. And if you have more then one object you want to delete, that can be pretty annoying. The same thing happens when I try to parent something, or when I render, etc.

I would like to know if this is fixed in Poser 7 Pro.

I have ATI video drivers and I updated them a few weeks ago. My computer is a Dell. I have an HP with Vista 32 bit and the same thing happens. Doesn't matter if you run Poser as an administrator or even XP Compatibility mode. I had none of these problems with XP.

Curiously, right after I updated my video drivers, Poser works quickly, no problems, no waiting. But when I shut the machine off and restarted it the next day, the same problems were back.

FYI, ati just released it's ewest driver last week.

So how do you know which is the right driver? I updated mine through the windows updater. The last time I tried through the ATI website, I downloaded some catalyst drivers that I believed were the right driver for my video card. But after I installed them, I couldn't boot up my machine. It would at the DOS (Black screen) and in a few seconds would restart over and over again. I restored the pc from a ghost image and never tried to update the drivers again. This was on my XP box. I've been letting windows do it since then.

I still had the problems with Poser7 and with PoserPro...after I made a clean Install of Vista I even doesn't bother anymore to install poser at all if it doesn't work correct ;(

The ati site is the only proper place to get the latst correct drivers from. no telling what microsoft is installing. the latest drivers are dated 5/08, and were released on the 16th I think.

Ok, this is going to sound strange, but for those of you having strange problems with poser under any version of windows, try this:

First, open your C drive (or whatever drive you have the poser app on) and schedule a disk check with automatic fix selected.  Reboot your machine and checkdisk will run.  This will take a while, but it will make certain that all of your files are properly indexed and no crosslinks exist.

Then, defragment the harddrive in question.  Now, why would this possibly make any difference?  Because Poser, wonderful application that it is, is probably the biggest memory hog on the planet.  As a result it makes very extensive use of Windows virtual memory, which in reality is nothing more than a swap file written out to the drive.

If this swap file becomes in any way corrupted, or is so fragemented that it becomes difficult for windows to access it in a timely fashion, Poser starts behaving erratically.

Very strange, but also very true.  Most other apps don't seem to mind one bit, but for whatever reason Poser is very, very sensitive to this.  So try a disk check followed by a defrag, and odds are pretty good that it will fix a lot of your stability problems regardless of what windows version you run.

Oh, and I run Poser 7 under Windows Vista 64, seems to work fine for me provided I defragement the drive once a week, runs nice and stable with no problems whatsoever.

If I double click on the icon for ATI at the lower left of my screen, it opens a Catalyst Control Center. There is a button that says Check for latest drivers. If I click on it, will it go out and find the right drivers without me going to the ATI website and trying to figure out which is the right one for me?

BTW, my HP computer has an NVidia graphics card and it has exactly the same problem with poser so maybe it's a 32 bit thing. Most people I see that say they aren't having problems say they are using 64 bit operating system.

I'd highly recommend you schedule a disk check for the drive.  Vista does have a regularly scheduled defrag routine, but the disk check is a must - this is seperate from defrag, it checks your disk for errors.

If you put your mouse cursor over the start button in the lower left hand corner of the screen and click the right moust button, you'll get a menu - go up and select "explorer", this will open windows explorer.

Look for the seciton marked "computer" and open it (if you need to, it might already be open).  Find your C drive and right click on it, go down and select properties. 

Under the tools tab, select the first option (Error Checking) by hitting the check now button.  This will pop up another dialog, put a checkmark in the Automatically fix file system errors and leave the other box unchecked, then hit start.

Windows will pop up yet another dialog, and tell you that it cannot run disk check while Vista is running and that if you want to automatically fix errors you'll need to reboot.  Click on the schedule disk check button.

Close down any dialogs that are still open, and then reboot your machine.  Windows will run the disk check at startup, just let it run, and be prepared, on a large drive this can take a while so bring a book.  Odds are good this will fix your problem with both the ghost crc and with Poser.

Beats me. I don't know how often they update that link.. and I know it won't include any monthly hot fixes.

How hard it is though, to write down your video card type? (Mine's an x1950 pro.. it's right on the box!)

Google ati driver.. it's always the first link.

You only pick:

Your operating system: (you should KNOW that!)

Card type: (Again right on th box.. and odds are it's a radeon)

And actual card: (Again right on the box.)

And you need to update monthly anyway, so after doing it for 3 or 4 months you should know all that by heart.

Every single person I know who updates his drivers regularly uses the website. it's NOT rocket science.

I also save the drivers locally, so if a new driver does have issues with something I need to run, I can "roll back" to the last good driver version. I usually keep the last 3 drivers on my system.

You are making this MUCH harder then it needs to be. You should be able to locate the driver for your hard in about 30 seconds tops.

How do you know if you are running 32 or 64 bit?  I have XP Pro installed. I know this is a dumb question ;)

If you open system properties (rt click the my computer icon and select properties) it will list the windows version you have under the 'general' tab. If it has an 'x64' in it's name then it's 64 bit else 32 bit.

Thanks ghonma. Another question ;) It looks like i only have 32 bit xp pro installed. My system is AMD 64X2 Dual 3800+ 2.01 GHz with 4 GB of RAM.  Can I upgrade the OS to 64? Where do i get it?

It seems I am unable to install Victoria 4.1 or 4.2 into Poser pro since it needs to be installed in poser executable runtime and smith micro/poser pro it seems not be the right one for daz installer. what shoould I do?

You would need Vista or XP in a 64-bit version. It really helps if you have a lot of RAM and run into memory errors often. It won't run faster otherwise. If you have up to 3 GB of memory you probably will not have real advantages though.

One thing to try is creating a small file called "poser.exe" in the directory (they have decided to now call it "poserpro.exe"). This will fix plenty of problems for those programs that actually check for the correct executable name. I can't remember if that was enough for V4. I did manage to get it installed so it shouldn't be that hard.

Installing Vista 64 is possible and might be a reasonable option. Almost all versions of Vista are also available in a 64 bit version. Vista Ultimate comes standard with it included, other versions require sending in a request for the 64 bit version at low cost.
Be forewarned that Vista is different from XP and might cause all kinds of problems for less experienced users. Casual users should have no problems (nor should experienced users), it's the group inbetween that is hit by all the problems. It only pays to upgrade to a 64 bit OS if you have problems with renders that are short of memory (so stop during the render).

Vista isn't the end of the world but for some people it's hell on earth.
Accept it on a new box but only upgrade if you have a very pressing need.

I waited to install vista 64 because of posts like the last one, but after installing it I can;t even stand oing back to xp on my old system, and within a eek, I had to install it on my wife's system as well.

Startup and shutdown are tons faster, and all my applications like poser pro and vue 6 infinite that have 64 bit renderers are tons faster.

Yes -- as of the last major service release, Vista seems to have been fixed.  Finally.  It only took over a year to accomplish........but better late than never.

I, too, can now recommend Vista 64.  It works like it should.  I have Vista 64 on a laptop.  I am hesitant to replace XP64 on my desktop with Vista for several reasons -- one reason being that a Vista 64 install would require a total reinstall of all of my software.  Another reason being that I'm not sure if some of my peripherals will work with Vista.......and the third reason being that switching over to a new OS & having to reinstall everything is a temporary hassle -- resulting in loss / slowdown of production time.

I'll probably do it eventually.  I'll just have to be sure that everything that I need for production is set up properly on my laptop first -- so that it won't stop me from working if my main desktop is temporarily offline.

People who haven't liked Vista up until now (like I didn't -- and strongly so) need to take a serious look at Vista 64, IMO.  It's worth it now - you just have to get used to doing a few things a little differently.  Which isn't any big deal.  And yes: the OS now appears to be more stable & faster than XP.  Not to mention more aesthetically pleasing -- an aspect which is often trashed as being a useless & worthless feature -- but I like it.

BTW - as for PoserPro -- it works GREAT under Vista 64.  No troubles.......& looks to be better than under XP64.

I am also using Vista 64-bit for both 3DMax 8 and Poser Pro, which are both 64-bit programs. Have not run any benchmarks yet, to compare t0 32-bit Vista, but I will since I have that on another machine. I will post benchmarks when I do.

Make sure you use the background 64 bit renderer. the standard renderer is the old 32 bit one
