Poser (IIRC) and D|S(certainly) already 'optimizes' texture images (basically downsamples them) to something not-so-bloated when used in preview.
Either way, the RAM used for a given texture image basically shrinks down to a pointer for the original image, and whatever the downsampled image file itself eats (and with OpenGL preview, I think you can offload that half of it to the vidcard's memory... can;t remember offhand though, so that part may not be 100% correct).

I think the issue here though is when he transports to Vue or another such application that apparently doesn't automatically downsize for previews, if I read the original posting correctly.
