Anyway - a little known thing about blend modes and masking (photoshop):
Double click on the layer you are using to mask the colour onto the photo and then have a look at the "Blend if grey" sliders at the bottom of the blend mode tab. You can move those around to suit what you need to mask tonally, the best thing happens when you press "Alt" and click on one of the sliders... it splits and effectively creates a gradual blend so it creates a nice border to your blend. Without which i would not have been able to do the above in the 5 minutes it took me.
